I was thinking, along with the students in the course I was teaching on the sociology of race and ethnicity: would having people read and possibly sign a statement of racism awareness help raise their awareness of how difficult it is to be "colorblind"?
We wondered, and set about researching just that.
Together, we drafted a statement. Now, as of today, we're beginning to show the statement to people and ask them for feedback. We ask, what are their thoughts and feelings about the statement? Would they be willing to sign such a statement? Do they have any suggestions for us about how to change it before we publish it on New Years Day?
On January 1st we'll post the statement and ask people like you, reading online, what you think about it, and if you're willing to "sign" the statement. You'll be able to do that in the form of posting a comment to the affirmative. Naturally, many of you may chose to post critical comments. They're welcome too, of course, all in the hopes that our exchanges will help advance our understanding of what racism is all about.
Stay tuned for a progress report. Otherwise, we hope you check back in first thing next year!
